'AT THE HELM'
Ingenuity, determination and extraordinary results. In a career that spans nearly 30 years, Ranil de Silva is, undoubtedly, one of Sri Lanka's great admen.
Ranil started his career as a Trainee Account Executive at J. Walter Thompson. In over the next 19 years, he rose to the ranks of International Vice President. Under his leadership, JWT Colombo became Sri Lanka's No. 1 agency. His foreign postings have taken him to JWT Indonesia and Singapore where he worked as a Regional Account Director for multinational clients across Asia Pacific.
After leaving JWT, Ranil started Leo Burnett Colombo in 1999 - in a one-room office! But that was just temporary as the astute agency head quickly lead Leo Burnett to creative and industry leadership; an achievement no other agency has accomplished in such a short space of time.
An art student, Ranil was drawn to advertising because it was a creative industry where each day was different from the last. And despite having already spent three decades in it, he still maintains a deep love for the industry - for its people, for its challenges, for its energy, for its ability to make a difference each and every day.
Ranil's passion and professionalism are what set him apart. Everything he does, whether its understanding people, developing a campaign or entertaining guests, he does with the same enthusiasm and commitment as when he first started. In a young man's business, this veteran's still has many great years ahead of him.
• Cargills Magic - He helped name the brand and made it Sri Lanka's No.1 ice cream.
• Odel - A partnership that started as an endeavour to help a friend resulted in one of Sri Lanka's most iconic brands.
• Mobitel - A distant 3rd in the mobile services market when Leo Burnett was assigned the account, Ranil and his team created a distinct purpose for the brand and helped Mobitel become the main category challenger with a customer base of 7 million.
